Flood Risk to Resilience:
Tampa Bay Coastal Master Plan
Building Resilience Through Collaboration
The Tampa Bay region faces escalating climate-related risks, including sea level rise, storm surge, intense rainfall, and high-tide flooding. Rapid population growth and limited regional coordination exacerbate these challenges, as current efforts to address flood resilience are often fragmented and lack a long-term, strategic framework.
The Tampa Bay Coastal Master Plan (TBCMP) will enhance resilience across the Tampa Bay region by addressing flooding impacts through a coordinated, data-driven, and community-based planning process. Through a four-year grant-funded project, the TBCMP will identify flood-vulnerable communities, prioritize restoration and flood reduction projects, and guide adaptation strategies. This initiative represents Florida’s first comprehensive, regionally coordinated, climate adaptation plan, serving as a scalable model for climate adaptation.
The TBCMP will span over 2,200 square miles, encompassing local counties and municipalities with diverse inland and coastal ecosystems. The plan will provide a roadmap for flood risk project funding and implementation, emphasizing:
- Equity: Prioritizing marginalized and underserved communities.
- Innovation: Integrating creative, data-driven solutions for coastal and inland flooding.
- Collaboration: Building cross-jurisdictional partnerships for long-term adaptability.
