Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council Releases a Debrief on the Dengue Fever Outbreak
Pinellas Park, Fla. — The Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council (TBRPC) is proud to announce the release of its debrief on the Dengue fever outbreak currently happening in the Tampa Bay area. This report synthesizes the scale of the outbreak and the response efforts being undertaken by the member governments of the TBRPC to reduce its impact on our region.
With its warm and wet subtropical conditions, Central Florida is a high-risk location for diseases spread by mosquitoes such as Dengue fever. However, in recent years cases of the disease have been confined to South Florida. Therefore, the rapid and sudden shift in local transmission to the Tampa Bay area, where it has developed into the largest Dengue fever outbreak in the continental United States since the 1940s, is cause for great concern. By compiling information on current county-level case numbers and mitigation strategies, the TBRPC aims to promote mosquito control efforts through greater regional understanding and connectivity.
